Katie's areas of specialty
Trauma
Therapy
Some of the biggest things that trouble us today stem from events that happened long ago.
A child's trauma is scary, alarming and sometimes brutal and it can affect us well into adulthood. This is what's known as traumatic stress. It can affect your emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being. You can end up feeling constantly beaten down and overwhelmed. This can cast a shadow on every aspect of your life.
Together, we look at your family history and the life you've lived and see how they shaped the person you are today. Often, by looking back at the story not only of your life, but the lives of the people closest to you, we can help you understand who you really are and chart a path toward healing.
Adoption &
Foster Care
Issues
Did you adopt a child? Or were you adopted as a child? Or did you spend time in foster care?
Adoptive and foster care families are among the most loving. They CHOSE to have a child, often overcoming bureaucratic and societal hurdles. But they can need extra support. Issues from early childhood can affect people well into adulthood.
Working with these individuals and families has been a core part of my practice for decades. Together, we explore how adoption or foster care issues shape their lives and examine the unresolved issues that affect them today. We find ways to move forward and build trusting relationships and happier, fulfilling lives.
Cancer Counseling
"You have cancer." Those three dreaded words set off a chain reaction of fear and uncertainty.
I know. I'm a cancer survivor myself.
When you go through cancer, you feel like you have no control. The physical effects of the cancer and the treatment process can be grueling. Yet at times, the emotional effects can seem worse.
But you are so much more than a cancer patient. You're the same person you've always been, with the same hopes, dreams, skills and imagination. Working together, we bring out the best in who you are and put you in the strongest possible position to fight this disease.
PTSD
From
COVID-19
The worst of COVID-19 may be over, but the effects of the pandemic are still with us.
Beyond those still suffering from the disease, many people are experiencing depression and PTSD whether they've had COVID or not. Many have experienced suicidal thoughts. We endured fear, isolation and estrangement from friends, families and colleagues. The impact can be greatest on children and adolescents who have lost critical years of development that they'll never get back.
Yet even in times of despair, I can offer soothing techniques to help you feel calm and give you a sense of hope. We work together to find your emotional center, a place where you can rebuild your life whatever the future may bring.
Forms of therapy
Individual Therapy
Does any of this sound familiar?
-
"I'm stuck and no one gets me."
-
"I've had the same bad relationships over and over and I'm realizing that something is wrong."
-
"I try so hard to make other people happy, but it doesn't work."
I hear this from clients over and over. Together we can discover who you are. We can define boundaries and help you develop a secure sense of self.
Couples Therapy
Many couples have no problem talking. But they do have problems communicating.
You tell your partner something that matters a lot to you. But, instead of really listening, your partner jumps in to say what's on their mind.
I have extensive training in active listening and Imago Relationship Therapy -- exercises that successfully build communication skills. I serve as a “mediator” guiding you and your partner's understanding of each other and helping you build a positive change in your relationship
Family Therapy
Is it hard to remember the last time the whole family got along? Are you struggling to keep everyone together — yet it’s not enough? Are there toxic people you need to avoid?
There is hope even in the most difficult situations. I structure family therapy in a fluid way, recognizing that no two families are alike. Working together, families learn to improve communications, avoid misunderstandings and overcome hurdles.
